Naperville is the oldest town in DuPage County, settled in 1831 by Captain Joseph Naper and his brother, John. The two built a sawmill on the DuPage River at the foot of present day Mill Street. Later, settlers came from Ohio, followed by immigrants from New England, New York and Germany.
Today, Naperville is the fourth largest city in Illinois with about 135,000 residents. Ranked as a top community in the United States to raise children, retire and start a home-based business, the city boasts nationally acclaimed schools, the best public library system in the country and an exceptionally low crime rate. A major business center, several national and multi-national companies have located their corporate headquarters in the city.
The Naperville Park District manages over 2,283 acres of land and other facilities, including the historic Riverwalk, one of the most beautifully maintained park grounds in the Midwest.
Naperville is committed to the high quality of life enjoyed by its citizens and businesses. Our mission is to enhance and preserve this quality of life through world class city policy development and implementation that provides municipal services that are reliable, efficient, and responsive to the needs of citizens.
