In 2001 the Village addressed a variety of issues and positioned itself for the future. A goal-setting meeting held in October established a plan for the next two years. The Village Board and staff are currently working toward attainment of the new goals.
During the year the Village and Park District worked cooperatively to create a new park on land owned by the Village located at Park and Richmond Avenues. By year-end the land had been regraded to provide needed soccer and baseball fields. Additional amenities including a pavilion are being planned for 2002 when the fields will be open for use. Donations from developers on Park Avenue paid for the improvements. The new park, located in a stormwater detention facility, has been designed to accommodate recreation without compromising capacity for stormwater.
Our successful concert series in the downtown was expanded from six to eight to great public response. In addition, a program offering financial assistance to downtown building owners interested in enhancing their storefronts was implemented. By year-end two grants were awarded.
The Zoning Board of Appeals/Plan Commission and Village Board initiated a substantive review of regulations relating to teardowns and plans for significant redevelopment of the campus at Notre Dame Parish. By year end the bulk of the work on amendments addressing teardowns was complete. Approval of the preliminary plans for Notre Dame was given in November. Both cases had significant community involvement and demonstrate the important role played by volunteer boards and committees in our community.
